Thanks to community, Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) raised more than $150,000 toward scholarships for arts participants of all ages last year. Let’s do it again Vashon! VCA’s much-anticipated annual Art Auction and Gala, Friday and Saturday, September 22 and 23, showcases works created by Island artists, tasty treats made by talented chefs and bakers and the generosity of local businesses, all in support of Vashon’s growing arts and culture milieu.

Auction/gala theme centers on the Swing Era. Kevin Hoffberg, 2017 Auction Chairperson, says, “Swing Time at VCA offers a fun and optimistic theme, big band background music and professional Lindy Hop dancers.”

Friday, September 22, 5:00 pm, “Friday Night Dance Hall” offers upbeat music and swing dance performances by Ben White and Ariel Goh, signature cocktails from Seattle Distillery, dinner by Herban Feast and ample opportunity to bid on outstanding art including works by commissioned artists Candy Gamble (photography), Christina Nichols (etching) and Kathy Pine (jewelry). Jeff Hoyt is our MC and Kevin Joyce lends his auctioneer talents.

“Ben and Ariel are wonderful dancers,” adds Hoffberg. “Watching them swing and jitterbug is a real treat. Don’t miss it!”

Saturday, September 23, 5:00 pm, swing dancers return for “Swing Saturday at the Savoy.” Wear your snazziest swing era attire! Sip signature cocktails; enjoy Herban Feast dinner and fine wines, hear who wins the eBike and bid on exquisite art including commissioned works by Ted Kutscher (oil painting), Julie Speidel (Japanese hand-rubbed print), Shawn Nordfors (wood sculpture) and celebrated senior artist Penny Grist (mosaic sculpture). Unforgettable experiences to vie for include two Manager seats to Hamilton in NYC with luxury accommodations, seven-day “Italy by Vespa” Tuscany tour for two and a festive dinner party/tour for 12 at Speidel Studio. Jeff Hoyt MC’s and Andrew McMasters conducts Saturday’s live auction.

“The arts play a big part in our community,” says Denise Katz, VCA Board President. “VCA obviously fills a key role. We sponsor more than 140 arts classes a year for all ages and provide a regionally recognized dance program. VCA offers home for wonderful Island performance groups such as Drama Dock, Vashon Island Chorale and Vashon Opera. We stage performances as diverse as Cowboy Junkies, Jet City Improv and Diane Schuur. Vashon Center for the Arts is more than a building; it’s the community supporting the arts for the community. We look forward to seeing you September 1, 22 and 23.”
