Vashon Opera: Lucia di Lammermoor
September 15 @ 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Vashon Opera's ninth Season will open with the beautiful and dramatic bel canto opera Lucia di Lammermoor. Soprano Jessica Milanese will portray the complicated and beloved character of Lucia while interpreting the vocal gymnastics that the bel canto style presents. Jessica returns to Vashon Opera following her moving portrayal of Sister Constance in Vashon Opera's production of Dialogues of the Carmelites and her comedic role of Miss Wordsworth in Vashon Opera's performances of Albert Herring.
The plot Lucia is quite devastating for Milanese's character. Tricked into believing that her true love, Enrico, doesn’t love her anymore, Lucia is forced to marry a man she doe not love in order to save her family’s fortune. These twists bring forth Lucia's descent into madness as she murders her new spouse and then dies herself.
"The circumstances that bring Lucia to commit a crime of passion, lose her love, mentally disintegrate, and die are all traits which she herself does not possess,” says Milanese, reflecting on Lucia’s story. “Rather, the themes of revenge, ambition for power, and pride are all traits [of others] who surround her and unfortunately, they determine her fate."
Lucia is composed by Gaetano Donizetti, a master composer in the bel canto style. This style is one of both virtuosic ornamentation and stunning legato phrases. "Singing in the bel canto style is like having a massage to your voice,” Milanese says, describing her love of the vocal style and how the music shapes the drama. “Donizetti knew how to write so that the voice sounds free and expressive so long as you are singing legato and always have a clear spin in your tone. This allows you to color the line with the shades of expression necessary to bring Lucia to life."
The cast includes other Vashon Opera favorites as well: Noah Baetge, last seen as Cavaradossi in Vashon Opera's production of Tosca, will sing Edgardo; Jose Rubio will return as Enrico, after singing Tonio in Vashon Opera's production of I Pagliacci; Charles Robert Austin, who appeared as Don Alfonso in Vashon Opera's Così fan tutte, will sing the role of Raimondo; and John Marzano, recently seen in Dialogues of the Carmelites as First Commissioner, will appear as Lord Arturo. Singers making their debut with the company are Andrew Etherington, who will play Normanno, and Alex Hollerman, who will sing the role of Alisa.
